+ Cuyahoga River Watershed
The length of the Cuyahoga River is approximately 100 miles. The last 20 miles before it empties into Lake Erie flow through Cuyahoga County. Although its length is 100 miles, its mouth is only 30 miles from its headwaters to the east. The headwaters of the Cuyahoga River are within 15 miles of Lake Erie and are north of the mouth. The Cuyahoga River begins at Hambden Township in Geauga County and flows south through Portage and Summit Counties until it encounters an escarpment near Akron which was formed during the glacial period. From there it is redirected back to the north toward Lake Erie. The u-shaped river drains an area of 813 square miles. The Cuyahoga River begins at an elevation of approximately 1,300 feet (above sea level) and empties into Lake Erie at an elevation of 574 feet.
